A Guide to Land Reclamation in Syria Using Covered Drainage Systems

General Information from the Syrian Engineering Guide, Specialized Guides Center

Reclaiming agricultural land and improving soil properties are fundamental pillars for achieving food security and sustainable development, especially in areas facing increasing water and environmental challenges. Covered drainage systems stand out as a highly advanced and effective agricultural engineering solution for addressing problems of rising groundwater levels and the accumulation of harmful salts in plant roots. This technology relies on burying a network of perforated pipes covered with special fabrics below the surface to regularly drain excess water. Reports from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) indicate that the application of modern agricultural drainage systems contributes to increasing agricultural productivity by 30% to 50% in waterlogged and saline lands.

Among the primary benefits of this technology is its superior ability to improve drainage and prevent the accumulation of stagnant water on the soil surface and in root zones. When water accumulates excessively, it deprives plants of the oxygen necessary for growth and leads to root rot and suffocation. By drawing this excess water and directing it to safe drains, covered drainage systems restore natural soil aeration and create an ideal environment that allows plant roots to expand and grow deeper. With exceptional flexibility, this positively impacts plant health and resistance to pests and diseases.

Furthermore, these systems play a crucial role in enhancing soil fertility and significantly increasing agricultural crop production. When excess water is reduced, biological and chemical processes within the soil improve, and beneficial organisms are activated, aiding in the decomposition of organic matter and providing essential nutrients to plants. Scientific studies in land management confirm that improving drainage conditions increases the efficiency of added fertilizers by up to 25%, thus reducing economic waste and increasing the quality and abundance of field crops.

In addition, combating soil salinity is one of the most important benefits provided by covered drainage systems. These systems wash away accumulated salts from the surface layers, removing them from the root zone of plants. Salt accumulation is the primary enemy of agricultural land because it reduces the plant's ability to absorb water. Agricultural research confirms that reducing salinity through regular drainage extends the productive lifespan of the soil for decades and transforms degraded land into fertile and productive green spaces.
