In order to emphasize the continuity of the past and the present, attention has been drawn at the present time to pay attention to this heritage and study and employ it to solve the problems of contemporary housing and quotation of previous solutions in the use of building materials manufactured from local materials and traditional architectural models and development and suitability for modern buildings. To contribute to the studies related to this field, we present research and analysis on the types of traditional buildings in Libya and their different classifications.

When the human being in the past more consistent and in harmony with nature was affected by the method of implementation of buildings and the selection of building materials involved in its construction and in the various stages of construction designed and implemented by several factors, including:

1. Environmental factor.

2. The social and cultural factor.

3. Technical and economic factor.

We now come to explain each factor individually and then try to classify the traditional historical buildings and places of geographical distribution, techniques used in construction, methods of implementation and architectural character used:

(1) environmental factor.

Our country is spread over a wide geographical area and is characterized by the presence of multiple climatic zones classified according to climatic studies to the Mediterranean climate in its northern parts and the semi-desert steppes climate that lies directly south of the first region. Used in construction, alluvial deposits are found in most of the coast and sand limestone is very fragile in the western coastal areas and the mountain areas have several good types of hard limestone suitable for use for coffee purposes In the vast desert area, mud deposits are spread in some oases in addition to the presence of other good stones for construction spread on the surface of the earth in the rocky desert areas and in mountainous areas, especially the western mountain region there are huge reserves of gypsum in addition to the presence of limestone used in the manufacture of lime and due to the circumstances The prevailing climatic and distribution of raw materials used in the old construction and the dependence of the population on the sources of local and nearby building materials before the era of industry and the machine inevitably all the craftsman traditional engineer to respond directly to these natural factors Of the identified substances that could be used as the largesse of nature near it constitutes an automatic with some simple knowledge in the science of engineering is a method of implementation and crystallization of the architectural character of the human response with nature.

(2) Socio-cultural factor.

It is no secret that the great influence of this factor on the choice of appropriate planning for housing and architectural style.Social needs and the provision of some requirements in the design, such as the provision of privacy directly affect the designer or craftsman in the old implementation and solved this issue in the old adoption of the courtyard house inside or what is known locally (monsters) We do not forget the main role played by Islam in adapting the planning of houses according to the teachings and values ​​of the true Islamic religion. In this context, it is noted that the ancient inhabitants were able to adapt their homes according to their beliefs, culture and society. Our contemporary Arab and Muslim societies have been forced to accept Western planning methods without being able to fit perfectly with their cultures.

(3) Technical and Economic Factor:

There is no doubt that the availability of knowledge and engineering expertise makes the process of planning and design of buildings more accessible and easy and in the past was reliance on professional craftsmen for the construction industry and experiences and information passed down from generation to generation and the skilled craftsman gathered in his person the architect designer and the structural engineer and the performing technical The implementation of a direct response to the building materials available locally and according to the functional purposes of the building and even the feelings of the population, which is itself one of them was the housing more humane, which we missed in the present time, although modern technology has been placed under our hands We have been confused and this is prominent in the form of our modern Arab cities, where the architectural styles are blended blatantly and lacks a lot of harmony, and we do not forget finally an important factor affecting the construction industry, which is the economic factor and the study of several models of buildings In several regions, in terms of implementation method, materials used and architectural style, we draw preliminary results in an attempt to establish a classification of building types based on the factors we have mentioned as the basis for classification.
