In light of the climate changes the world is witnessing and the increasing intensity of rainfall over short periods, the need to rethink rainwater management methods in cities has become urgent. The traditional solution of draining this water away through sewage networks is no longer the best option. Instead, the need has arisen for sustainable solutions that transform this water from a burden into a resource. This is where the importance of underground rainwater storage systems comes in, which this infographic explains in a simple and practical way.
 
The idea behind this system is based on intelligent engineering that mimics nature. Special collection networks are designed to efficiently capture rainwater from rooftops, buildings, and roads, preventing the accumulation of puddles and flooding in the streets, which cause damage to infrastructure and traffic.
 
Instead of this water being lost, it is directed through pipes to special underground storage units, sometimes called infiltration tanks or underground storage bins. These buried underground units temporarily store large quantities of water. A key feature of these systems, particularly those using open-bottomed mesh bins, is that they allow the stored water to seep slowly and gradually into the surrounding soil layers. It contributes to replenishing groundwater by replenishing the natural underground water supply.
 
Applying this engineering system achieves far-reaching environmental and strategic benefits: flood protection; reduced pressure on main drainage networks during heavy rainstorms; protection of water resources and environmental conservation by preventing surface water pollution from pollutants carried by rainwater as it flows through streets and by naturally purifying it through the soil before it reaches groundwater; urban sustainability; and the creation of a more resilient urban environment better equipped to cope with climate change.
 
Studies in urban hydrology have demonstrated that using storage and infiltration systems can significantly reduce surface runoff, up to 90% in some areas, thus drastically reducing the risk of urban flooding. Statistics from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) indicate that the efficiency of these systems in stormwater management far surpasses that of traditional systems in densely populated cities.
