Implementation Guide for At-Grade Parking Spaces According to Syrian Specifications
Guidelines for Constructing Ground-Level Car Parks According to Syrian Specifications
General Information from the Syrian Engineering Manual – Specialized Manuals Center
Ground-level car parks are a vital component of infrastructure planning for modern cities and major residential and commercial projects, playing a pivotal role in accommodating vehicle traffic and alleviating congestion on public streets. Constructing these spaces requires strict adherence to engineering and technical standards to ensure user safety and smooth traffic flow within the facility.
The initial construction phase begins with verifying standard dimensions and clearances. This involves precisely defining individual parking spaces and traffic lanes to suit standard vehicle sizes, while allowing sufficient room for safe maneuvering and turning to prevent collisions or internal accidents.
This is followed by the design of ramps and entrances. The gradients of ramps connecting different levels—or linking the street to the parking area—are carefully calculated to ensure vehicles can ascend and descend easily and safely, without damaging the cars or creating hazards for drivers; the inclusion of non-slip surfaces is also a key requirement.
Engineering standards also mandate the installation of high-efficiency ventilation and drainage systems. Ventilation ensures the extraction of vehicle exhaust and harmful accumulated gases, maintaining fresh air quality in enclosed parking areas. Drainage networks for rainwater and wash-water are essential to prevent water pooling and protect the concrete structure from deterioration. The implementation process concludes with safety and fire-prevention requirements, involving the installation of early warning systems, fire-suppression water pumps, and clearly illuminated evacuation exits to ensure rapid emergency response and the protection of lives and property.
International engineering studies on urban planning and parking facilities indicate that adhering to sound engineering designs for ground-level parking can increase capacity by up to 20% and reduce internal maneuvering accidents by more than 50%.
