Syria and Iran sign "historic strategic" agreement on reconstruction
Syria and the Iranian authorities on Monday signed an agreement on long-term strategic economic cooperation between the two countries.
The agreement was signed by Syrian Prime Minister Imad Khamis and Iranian Vice President Ishaq Jahangiri, who is on an official visit to Damascus following the conclusion of the 14th meeting of the Iranian-Syrian Higher Committee for Economic Cooperation, during which nine memorandums of understanding were also signed in several areas. Among them are railways, building houses, investment, fighting terrorism financing, money laundering, education and culture.
In statements made after the signing ceremony, the Syrian prime minister said during a press conference with the Iranian vice president that the agreements concluded by the Syrian government with Iran "are indicative of Damascus's seriousness in providing facilities to Iranian public and private companies for investment and reconstruction."
He added that it is "complementary to the agreements signed previously, but the long-term economic cooperation agreement is the most important agreement," saying that the signing of documents today is a "historic moment" in relations "between the two countries.
For his part, the Iranian vice president pledged that Tehran would stand with Syria in the reconstruction phase as it was during the war, declaring that his country will build several power stations in Syria.
Speaking at the press conference, Jahangiri said that Iran considers Syria's victory a victory for it, stressing that the international community must ensure the security of this region. Had it not been for successful anti-terrorism policies in Syria and Iraq, terrorism in Europe would have been signed today. The construction and repair of several power stations in Syria, the first stone will be laid tomorrow in Latakia. ”
Iran, along with Russia, is one of the most important supporters of the Syrian authorities in the international political arena as well as in the response of Damascus to armed groups since the outbreak of the crisis in Syria in 2011.
The Syrian government has already confirmed by its Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade, Mohammad Samer al-Khalil, who visited Tehran on December 30, 2018, that Iranian companies will have priority in the reconstruction of Syria during the post-crisis phase in this country.
