Space solves the mystery "Swirling Nazca" in Peru

Archaeologists used high-resolution satellite footage to finally solve the mystery of the ancient Nazca people in Peru.

A group of carefully constructed dumas spread on the land of the Nazca desert in southern Peru, whose mystery has long been aroused by scientists.

Rosa Lasaponarac, a researcher at the Institute for Environmental Analysis Methodologies in Italy, said how images from space helped her study the distribution of these lines and their links to nearby settlements.

The researchers found that these lines are an attempt to survive in times of drought, as they constitute a system for the recovery of water from the underground aquifers.

"This system must have been more sophisticated than it appears today, and it has enabled the Nazca people to exploit water throughout the year in one of the driest places in the world," Lasaponarac said.
